HOW WE WORK
SCHOOL ORGANISATION
Children are taught in separate age groups. All classes are single year groups and are taught a full range of subjects by the class teacher with some interchange of teachers for certain activities e.g. P.E. and Music.
The curriculum is differentiated so that all children, regardless of age are given the opportunity to progress at a rate appropriate to their ability.
Time spent on teaching:

Foundation Stage children (Nursery ) 15 hours weekly.

Foundation Stage children (Reception ) 23 hours weekly.

Key Stage 1 children (Years 1 and 2) 23 hours weekly.

Key Stage 2 children (Years 3-6) 24.5 hours weekly.
CURRICULUM
Throughout the school all children are taught the full range of National Curriculum Subjects at the appropriate level for their age and ability. The National Curriculum consists of core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science and foundation subjects: Information and Communications Technology, History, Geography, Design and Technology, Music, Art and Physical Education. We also teach Religious Education, which in our school is the core subject, and a number of cross curricular subjects including Personal and Social Education, Equal Opportunities and Multicultural Education. Children in Years 3-6 learn French as a Modern Foreign Language.
Each subject has a programme of study setting out the essential matters which need to be covered by pupils at each stage of their education. Attainment targets set out the knowledge and skills against which pupils are assessed during each key stage.

Assessment arrangements are the means by which individual achievements are identified at each stage of the child’s development, to check on their progress and help plan their future learning programme. In addition to teacher assessment, which happens on a regular basis, children in Y2 and Y6 are formally assessed using the Standard Assessment Tasks or tests which are applied to all children nationally. Pupils in other years take part in regular assessments which give an indication of where pupils are relative to their starting points and their next steps for learning.
We use the Read, Write, Inc phonics scheme for teaching children phonics knowledge from Reception class onwards.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR
There are many opportunities for children at St. Catherine’s to get involved in clubs and sporting activities. During the year we offer a range of activities catering for children of all ages in addition to the traditional activities like Football, Netball and Drama Clubs which operate after school.
Children must have written consent before attending an after-school club. These enrichment activities are a strong feature of the school and provide opportunities for developing the whole child.
